Description

This course is an introduction to photography. The aims ensure a general all round knowledge of both analogue and digital photographic techniques. With the objective to make well-crafted, consistent photographs, using a variety of techniques both in the darkroom and digitally. This course will whet your appetite enabling you to be more confident with your picture making and this introduction will allow you to enrol onto some of the other courses on offer. You will be learning about the main genres in photography allowing you to begin to develop your own personal style and interests.

 

Detailed Description

This course prepares the student for further study and therefore gives an essential introduction into understanding all functions of the camera – shooting in fully manual mode. This course will allow you to learn the terms for both analogue and digital modes and will introduce you to both the digital and analogue darkroom. You will be guided through using black & white film, processing film, making contact sheets and making prints learning the necessary darkroom skills. There will be group discussions and presentations by the tutor, ensuring the student understands the mechanics of picture making through both analogue and digital methods.

This course cover areas which are often overlooked, such as understanding analogue techniques in order to make better digital images. The weekly sessions allows the student to experiment and learn in an informal and friendly atmosphere. They will be introduced to informal discussion and critiques of their work. They will be encouraged to explore and play with emphasis on producing a range of images practically and hands on.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Produce photographs demonstrating some technical and theoretical understanding.
  • Produce visually interesting photographs through simple composition techniques. 
  • Be able to process b&w film and make work prints in a darkroom.
  • Demonstrate an ability to download photographs to the computer and to learn how to manage digital files. 
  • Make a set of coherent prints, produced digitally, in the darkroom or both.
